New! Decatur Police Use CrimeReports.com
To provide timely information to the community, the Decatur Police Department now uses a service called CrimeReports.com – a website that is updated regularly to reflect crimes that have occurred in the city of Decatur. The site provides maps showing various types of crimes, including robberies, burglaries, and thefts that have occurred within our city limits.
The website is available for review at any time and offers the community up-to-date, timely information. Visit www.CrimeReports.com and sign in to register and see the information. You may also sign up for an email alert list that will provide an email advisory regarding various crimes that have occurred on your street or in your neighborhood.
The police department will continue to send “News Alerts” as needed to advise residents of things to be on the lookout for. The alerts will be sent primarily to neighborhood associations for distribution and dissemination.
Details on the June 7, 2009 robbery:
On Sunday, 6-7-09, at approximately 6pm, a Decatur resident was walking
on Glendale Avenue near Forkner Drive and was approached by 2 African
American males who said “Give me your bag, give me your purse.” When she
stated that she did not have a purse, one of the subjects hit her in her
face, snatched her beach bag and towel and left the scene.
Description of Subjects:
• 2 African American males
• Subject 1 - about 6’0” tall wearing green plaid shorts. Suspect sketch.
• Subject 2 - about 5’7” wearing a white tank top and possibly a white hat, twists in his hair. Suspect sketch.
This case is still under investigation.

For patrol and reporting purposes, the City of Decatur is split into four zones. North and South are separated by the railroad tracks. East and West are separated on the North side by Clairemont Avenue and North McDonough Street. East and West on the South side are separated by South McDonough Street.

Glossary of terms
Active: indicates a case in which no arrest has been made nor has the case been exceptionally cleared.
Cleared by Arrest: a case is cleared by arrest when one or more persons is arrested. The charge does not have to be the exact offense reported for the case to be cleared. For example, a theft by taking motor vehicle report is written. Later, an offender is arrested in the car on a charge of theft by receiving. The original case can be cleared.
Unfounded: an offense is unfounded when the investigation yields no evidence to verify the incident occurred or the report is discovered to be false.
Exceptionally Cleared: a case is exceptionally cleared when ALL of the following conditions are met:
- The identity of the offender is known.
- There is sufficient evidence to support an arrest.
- There is some reason outside police control that stops or prevents you from charging the offender
Some reasons for not charging may be:
- the victim refuses to prosecute.
- death of the offender (suicide, killed during crime, etc.
- a juvenile released to parents rather than charged.
- defender is already serving lengthy sentence for another crime and shall not be arrested again
- offender shall be prosecuted in another jurisdiction and shall not be returning to your jurisdiction.
Battery: intentionally causes substantial physical harm or visible bodily harm to another. Simple and aggravated battery is included in this category.
Simple Battery (misdemeanor): intentionally makes physical contact of an insulting or provoking nature; intentionally causes physical harm to another.
Aggravated Battery (felony): maliciously causes bodily harm to another by depriving individual of a member of his/her body, by rendering a member of ones body useless, or seriously disfiguring ones body or a member thereof.
